Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Thursday revealed that she sleeps only two to four hours each night, a disclosure that has reignited debate over Japan’s demanding work culture. The revelation comes amid growing criticism of her stance on overwork, as she has previously encouraged long working hours to boost productivity.
The comments follow a controversial 3 am staff meeting held last week at her office to prepare for a parliamentary session.
Addressing a legislative committee, Takaichi said, “I sleep about two hours now, four hours at the longest. I feel it’s bad for my skin," when asked about the government’s efforts to reduce Japan’s notoriously long working hours.
Japan has long struggled with work-life balance, and the phenomenon of death from overwork, known locally as “karoshi," continues to be a serious concern. Many employees face intense pressure at offices, often working overtime under strict deadlines.
Takaichi was also questioned about discussions in her government over potentially extending the legal limit on overtime work to stimulate economic growth. She defended the debate, stating that workers and employers have different needs.
“Some people choose to work two jobs to make ends meet, while businesses impose strict limits on overtime," she explained, adding that any changes would prioritise the health and well-being of workers.
The Japanese prime minister emphasised the importance of balancing work with family and personal life, saying, “If we can create a situation where people can properly balance childcare and caregiving responsibilities according to their wishes, and also being able to work, enjoy leisure time, and relax — that would be ideal."
Takaichi became Japan’s first female prime minister last month after being elected head of the Liberal Democratic Party. She pledged to abandon the notion of work-life balance for herself, vowing to “work, work, work, work, and work."
Since taking office, she has maintained a packed schedule, attending regional meetings and holding bilateral talks with leaders including US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.
