Lahore building collapse during birthday party kills 11 in heavy rain

At least 11 people, including three children, were killed when a three-storey building collapsed during heavy rain in Lahore late on Wednesday night while a family was celebrating a birthday, officials said on Thursday. Six people were rescued alive and taken to hospital.

In another rain-related incident, two children were killed and three others were injured after the roof of a house collapsed in Faisalabad on Wednesday night. The deaths came weeks after 14 children died when the roof of a tutoring centre collapsed in Lahore.

The Lahore building collapse took place in Baghbanpura, a low-income and densely populated area of the city, where three brothers were living with their wives and children in the three-storey house. Lahore Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Ejaz said the birthday function was underway when the structure, possibly weakened by heavy monsoon showers, came down. He said, "The family's sister and her children too had joined the birthday party when the building collapsed, leaving around 20 persons trapped under the rubble." He added, "Bodies of 11 people were recovered while six persons were taken out alive and shifted to a hospital."

According to Punjab Emergency Services Rescue 1122, the dead included three women and three children. Ejaz said recent heavy monsoon rains might have weakened the structure before it collapsed. House and roof collapse incidents were possibly triggered by the heavy rainfall that has hit Lahore and nearby areas over the last few days. Monsoon Control Room data showed that the Mughalpura station, located in the Baghbanpura and Harbanspura neighbourhood, received 44.4 mm of rain on Wednesday. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured, her office said.

In Faisalabad, about 150 km west of Lahore, the roof of a home collapsed during rainfall on Jhang road on Wednesday night. State-run Associated Press of Pakistan, quoting Rescue-1122, reported on Thursday that five family members were inside their dilapidated home in Talianwala when the roof caved in. Two boys, aged six months and five years, were killed under the debris, while three other people were injured.

The incidents in Lahore and Faisalabad were linked to heavy rainfall and followed the roof collapse at a tutoring centre in Lahore's densely populated Kahna Nau area weeks earlier, in which 14 children died.
