Among the 12 people who were killed and 29 injured in the shooting at a Jewish religious event in Australia, is a man who survived the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel in 2023. He had recently shifted to Australia and had “never expected" to face such an incident in Australia.

Two gunmen shot dead at least 11 people on Sunday at a Jewish event being held at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, attended by 2,000 people. Police fatally shot one gunman, and the second was arrested and identified as the 24-year-old Naveed Akram.

Reuters quoted New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon saying police were investigating whether a third gunman was involved in the shooting, and a bomb-disposal unit was working on several suspected improvised explosive devices.

In the videos after the incident, a man appeared with a bloodied face and a bandage wrapped around his head. “I was here with my family, it was a Hanukkah celebration, there were hundreds of people, there were children, there were elderly, families enjoying themselves," he told 9News.

“Children, kids at a festival, playing and then all of a sudden it’s absolute chaos. There’s gunfire everywhere, people ducking, it was absolute chaos. We didn’t know what was happening, where the gunfire was coming from," he said.

“I saw at least one gunman… firing randomly and in all directions. I saw children fall to the floor, I saw elderly, I saw invalids, it was an absolute bloodbath," he said.

According to 9News, the man, who has not been identified, said he had lived in Israel for the last 13 years and had survived the October 7 attacks there in 2023.

He told the news organisation that he came to Australia two weeks ago “to work with the Jewish community, to fight antisemitism, to fight this bloodthirsty, ravishing hatred".

“October 7, that’s the last time I saw this. I never thought I’d see this in Australia, not in my lifetime, on Bondi Beach of all places, this iconic place," he further said.

“We’ve lived through worse, we’re going to get through this, and we’re going to get the bastards who did this," he added.
