Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday blamed Congress and INDI bloc parties for violence during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 and said no Muslim lost their citizenship under the law.

Shah’s remarks came amid concerns over protests against the Waqf Amendment Act in parts of the country .

“Rahul Gandhi and opposition propagated throughout the country that Muslims will lose their citizenship due to CAA. It has been two years since CAA is in force. I challenge Rahul Gandhi to show if any Muslim lost his citizenship. Congress and INDI bloc parties misled people. They were responsible for violence," the Home Minister said at News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2025.

When asked if he fears CAA-like protests this time, Shah said, “They (opposition) must have understood something by now."

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has also agreed to hear petitions challenging the law on April 15.

Shah said only some leaders in the Muslim community are protesting against the new law. He added that minority — women and the poor — within the minority community are being empowered but the Congress is protesting the legislation.
