Amid a tariff faceoff with Canada, US President Donald Trump came down heavily on the neighbouring country for its trade ties with China.

Trump has threatened a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian imports if Ottawa continues to strengthen its economic relationship with Beijing.

In a fresh warning to Canada, he said this counts for a potential Chinese “takeover" of the country expressing his concerns in a series of posts on social media. He said China will eventually dominate the Canadian economy, using it as a “backdoor" to flood the United States with foreign products.

“The last thing the World needs is to have China take over Canada. It’s NOT going to happen, or even come close to happening!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social.

The last thing the World needs is to have China take over Canada. It’s NOT going to happen, or even come close to happening! Thank you for your attention to this matter. He said if such a deal is struck, Canada will be immediately hit with the sweeping tariffs. His warnings were specifically directed at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whom he mockingly referred to as “governor".

Trump further criticised Carney for prioritising Chinese trade deals over critical regional defence initiatives, such as the proposed “Golden Dome" missile shield over Greenland.

“Canada is against The Golden Dome being built over Greenland, even though The Golden Dome would protect Canada," he said. “Instead, they voted in favour of doing business with China, who will ‘eat them up’ within the first year!"

He also said this will lead to the destruction of Canadian businesses, social fabric, and their general way of life. He cautioned the Canadian prime minister against turning Canada into a “drop off port" for Chinese goods destined for the US market.

The US President’s remarks follow recent efforts by the Canadian leadership to secure more stable trade through agricultural agreements and investment opportunities with China.

Carney recently visited China – Canada’s second-largest trading partner – to revive economic cooperation. The visit resulted in a framework to lower tariffs on certain Canadian agricultural exports and introduce quotas on Chinese electric vehicles entering the Canadian market. The Canadian PM has previously characterised these discussions with Beijing as “realistic and respectful", describing the engagement as more “predictable" than the ongoing trade frictions with the US. While addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, he had criticised western policies further stoking the fires of the ongoing diplomatic row with Washington.

Trump, however, remains unmoved by Ottawa’s quest for trade stability, insisting that any deepening of ties with Beijing will result in the total economic isolation of Canada from the American market.
