A plane crashed into a busy Philadelphia suburb on Friday evening (Philadelphia local time), resulting in multiple casualties on the ground as many homes were on fire, news agency Reuters quoted federal officials and local media as saying. The plane fell onto the ground in the vicinity of the Roosevelt Mall in Philadelphia.

The medical transport jet was carrying a child patient and five others. Jet Rescue Air Ambulance said the patient and another passenger were on board along with four crew members.

“We cannot confirm any survivors," the company said in a statement.

“Our immediate concern is for the patient’s family, our personnel, their families and other victims that may have been hurt on the ground."

The Federal Aviation Administration said the crash took place around 6.30 pm (0030 GMT).

Philadelphia’s emergency management office said that roads in the area were closed soon after the crash.

Unconfirmed reports stated the plane crashed nearly 30 seconds after taking off.

The number of casualties on the ground was not immediately known.

Another video showed chaos and panic on the streets as multiple homes were seen up on flames in the vicinity of the plane crash.

Locals, in one video, were seen in panic, as they heard a loud boom and saw a ball of fire just as the plane crashed.

‘MAJOR INCIDENT’: CONFIRM AUTHORITIES

The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management confirmed on social media that there was a “major incident" in the area of the reported crash, but provided no other details.

“We have no reports on the number of fatalities," Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said at the scene, adding “Several dwellings and vehicles were impacted."

Governor Josh Shapiro said he was offering all “Commonwealth resources as they respond to the small private plane crash in Northeast Philly."

The plane, a Learjet 55, quickly disappeared from radar after taking off from the airport at 6.06 pm and climbing to an altitude of 1,600 feet (487 meters). It was en route to Springfield, Missouri, and registered to a company operating as Med Jets, according to the flight tracking website Flight Aware.

DONALD TRUMP POSTS ON PHILADELPHIA PLANE CRASH

In a post on his Truth Social account, US President Donald Trump posted, “So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls lost."

“Our people are totally engaged. First Responders are already being given credit for doing a great job. More to follow. God Bless you all," he added.

PHILADELPHIA PLANE CRASH: EYEWITNESSES ACCOUNT

According to news agency PTI, Michael Schiavone, 37, was sitting at his home in Mayfair, a nearby neighbourhood, on Friday when he heard a loud bang and his house shook. He said it felt like a mini earthquake and when he checked his home security camera footage, he said it looked like a missile was coming down.

“There was a large explosion, so I thought we were under attack for a second," he said.

The plane’s owner, Jet Rescue, provides global air ambulance services. The company, based in Mexico, flew baseball hall of famer David Ortiz to Boston after he was shot in the Dominican Republic in 2019 and was involved in transporting patients critically ill with Covid-19, CNN reported.

The FAA said the Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation.

The crash follows this week’s collision of an American Airlines jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter over Washington, DC, which killed 67 in the deadliest airplane crash in the US since 2009.
