US President Donald Trump on Tuesday honoured Stephanie Diller, the widow of slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, and vowed to impose the death penalty on anyone who kills a police officer under a permanent law in America.
Jonathan, who was a father to a one-year-old, was fatally shot in the stomach during a routine traffic stop in Far Rockaway while approaching a suspicious car in March last year.
“He was gunned down. I went to his funeral last year. The murderer had 21 prior arrests on different charges. He was a bad one. When I met Diller’s widow, Stephanie, and son, Ryan, it was really inspirational. Thank you very much," Trump said while addressing the Congress.
“Stephanie, we are going to make sure that Ryan knows his dad is a true hero. And we are going to get these criminals off our streets. We need to stop it. It’s time now," he added.
Trump Takes Historic Step
Trump announced signing an executive order paving the way for the death penalty for criminals who kill a police officer. “I want to make it a permanent law," said Trump.
Notably, the decision was Trump’s key demand during his campaigning for the US Presidential Elections in 2024. Speaking at a rally in Green Bay, he urged Congress to pass legislation to ensure that people convicted of murdering police officers are given capital punishment.
Following Diller’s death, Trump visited his family and joined them in praying the Lord’s Prayer. He travelled to Long Island at the invitation of Diller’s family, where he expressed his condolences to Stephanie and Ryan.
In her eulogy on March 30, 2024, Stephanie Diller asked, “How many more police officers and how many families must make the ultimate sacrifice before we begin protecting them?"
Diller was performing a routine traffic stop in Far Rockaway when he was shot dead after a confrontation ensued involving an illegally-parked vehicle.
The suspect, Guy Rivera, 34, was later arrested and charged with the murder of a police officer, attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
