US President Donald Trump has suggested that displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip be permanently resettled outside the war-torn region and proposed that the US take “ownership" in redeveloping Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East."

His bold proposal during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to White House is likely to disrupt the next phase of negotiations aimed at extending the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and securing the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza.

The controversial remarks came as discussions intensify this week, with promises of increased humanitarian aid and reconstruction supplies to assist Gaza’s recovery after over 15 months of devastating conflict. Now, Trump aims to relocate around 1.8 million people from their homeland and potentially place the land under US control, possibly with American troops involved.

Welcoming the Israeli Prime Minister to the White House on Tuesday, Trump said he and his team have been discussing the possibility of resettlement with Jordan, Egypt, and other countries in the region.

However, Egypt, Jordan, and other US allies in the Middle East have warned Trump that relocating Palestinians from Gaza could destabilise the region, escalating the conflict, and jeopardising the long-standing effort by the US and its allies to achieve a two-state solution.

He said he would like to see an agreement to “resettle people permanently in nice homes and where they can be happy and not be shot, not be killed."

Protests Against Netanyahu’s Visit Outside White House

Pro-Palestinian groups gathered outside the White House in Washington, DC on Tuesday to protest Israel’s actions in Gaza and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s meeting with US President Donald Trump. The demonstration coincided with Trump hosting Netanyahu for talks in the Oval Office.

Netanyahu’s visit came as a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas continues in Gaza, where over 47,500 Palestinians have died since October 7, 2023. Protestors waved Palestinian flags and chanted “Free, free Palestine" and “Stop hosting a war criminal." They also held signs that read “Prime Minister of Genocide," “Netanyahu is a War Criminal," and “Israel Kills."
