Donald Trump on Wednesday reacted to the Republican Party’s setbacks in Tuesday’s elections, attributing the losses to two key reasons, his absence from the ballot and the government shutdown.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Trump wasn’t on the ballot, and shutdown, were the two reasons that republicans lost elections tonight," citing pollsters as the source of the assessment.

Trump’s post comes after multiple Republican candidates, including Curtis Sliwa, were defeated in the mayoral and governer elections across the United States.

The President, who remains the Republican frontrunner for the 2024 presidential race, has often claimed that GOP candidates fare better when he is directly involved in campaigns.

In a victory for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, Zohran Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on January 1.

Mamdani’s unlikely rise gives credence to Democrats who have urged the party to embrace more progressive, left-wing candidates instead of rallying behind centrists in hopes of winning back swing voters who have abandoned the party.

In the Virginia and New Jersey governors’ elections, moderate Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill cruised to comfortable victories, on an election night seen as a referendum on Donald Trump’s second presidential term.

Pitting centrist Democrats against Trump-aligned Republicans, both elections were seen as signalling whether middle-of-the-road voters had made peace with the president’s radical cost-slashing agenda — or plan to give his party a bloody nose in 2026.
