A Bangladeshi woman journalist was surrounded and heckled by a mob in Dhaka on Saturday night accusing her of being an Indian agent and attempting to do everything “to make Bangladesh a part of India". She was handed over to the police who later released her.

The incident took place in the Karwan Bazar area of the capital city as the eminent TV figure Munni Saha was leaving the office. The video of the same has surfaced on social media, depicting the current state of affairs in the neighbouring country where atrocities against Hindus and other minorities have peaked in recent times and have been left unabated.

How Did The Incident Unfold?

The viral videos show her sitting in her car and being surrounded by a mob shouting slogans. Another video showed her standing amidst a mob and an individual shouting at her.

The mob accused her of spreading misinformation and attempting to do “everything to make Bangladesh a part of India". She kept nodding in denial as she kept on saying, “This is my country too".

“You are doing everything you can to make this country a part of India. The blood of students is on your hands," the voice is heard saying in the video.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police intervened and took her away in a police vehicle. She was first taken to Tejgaon Police Station and then transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch office, raising concerns about her arrest.

However, the police clarified that she was not detained and was let off on Sunday morning. She experienced a panic attack, the police said.

Journalist Wanted In Student’s Death Case

According to Bangladeshi media reports, Saha is wanted in the case associated with the death of a student during the massive anti-reservation protests that turned violent and later resulted in the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“People handed her over to the police. She suffered a panic attack. We have released her after considering her health condition and the fact that she is a woman journalist," Rezaul Karim Mallik, a police official of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star Newspaper.

He said that the journalist had been asked to seek bail from the court.

Several journalists in Bangladesh have been charged with crimes against humanity after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and the taking over of the Yunus interim government.
