Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday strongly condemned the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges, calling it “unjust" and demanded his immediate release.
Das, who led multiple protests against the atrocities of Hindus in Bangladesh, was arrested by the Dhaka Police’s Detective Branch on November 25 at the capital’s airport.
Hasina expressed her concern in a letter, stating that a “top leader of Sanatan religious community has been unjustly arrested".
“A temple has been burnt in Chittagong. Previously, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries and homes of the Ahmadiyya community were attacked, vandalized and looted and set on fire," Hasina said in her statement.

She further noted: “Religious freedom and security of life and property of people of all communities should be ensured."
On November 28, a Bangladeshi court denied bail to Das, sending him to prison, which sparked protests from Hindus in several parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka and Chattogram.
The arrest has drawn international attention, with Ministry of External Affairs condemning the incident. The MEA had urged Bangladeshi authorities to guarantee the safety and security of Hindus and other religious minorities.
“We urge Bangladesh authorities to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their right of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression," said the MEA in an official statement on Tuesday.
Das, a former member of the Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), had joined a different religious group, which led to his advocacy for the rights of Hindus. Hindus are the largest minority group in Bangladesh, making up about 8% of the population.
The arrest of Das comes at a time of heightened tension over religious issues in Bangladesh, particularly following the student-led revolution that ousted Hasina from power.
