US Food Influencer ‘FoodWithBearHands’ Shot Dead After He Threatened Cop With Knife

According to the sheriff’s office, Michael Duarte had been “exhibiting erratic behavior and making threats to kill everyone.”

Michael Duarte, originally from California, had built a large following for his barbecue and grilling videos.

Popular food influencer Michael Duarte- known online as “FoodWithBearHands"- was shot dead by a sheriff’s deputy in Texas after he allegedly threatened the officer with a knife and charged at her. The incident took place on November 8 in Castroville, Texas, according to the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were responding to an emergency call about a “male subject with a knife acting erratically." When the first deputy arrived, Michael Duarte was reportedly ordered several times to drop the knife and get on the ground, instructions he ignored, the New York Post reported. Instead, he allegedly ran toward the deputy while shouting, “I’m going to kill you."

The deputy fired two shots. Michael Duarte received medical aid at the scene and was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the sheriff’s office, Michael Duarte had been “exhibiting erratic behavior and making threats to kill everyone." Officials said he had also attempted to assault Fire and EMS personnel who were first to reach the location.

Michael Duarte, originally from California, had built a large following for his barbecue and grilling videos, gaining recognition across platforms for his distinctive cooking style and personality. Reports indicate he was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the confrontation.

His death was confirmed by his talent representatives, Alooma Media Group, who posted a tribute describing him as a devoted family man and a cherished collaborator.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our valued client and dear friend, Michael Duarte. Michael was so much more than a client to us… His passion, professionalism, and creativity left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of working with him," the post read.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with funeral expenses, transportation of his body back to California and support for his wife and their six-year-old daughter.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
