US President Donald Trump’s ambitious $175 billion ‘Golden Dome’ space-based missile defense plan ignited strong condemnation from nuclear-armed rivals Russia, China, and North Korea, all of whom have labeled it “dangerous" and a significant threat to international security.
Donald Trump unveiled the ‘Golden Dome’ plan last week, asserting it would utilize satellites and other advanced technologies to detect and intercept missile strikes “even if they are launched from other sides of the world." While the US President aims for a three-year operational timeline, experts believe full functionality is years away. The plan has drawn sharp rebukes from the US’s primary competitors, who have directly criticized what they perceive as American “arrogance."
What North Korea Said On Donald Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ Plan
North Korea’s foreign ministry, despite Kim Jong Un’s publicly cordial relationship with Donald Trump during his previous term, characterized the ‘Golden Dome’ as akin to an “outer space nuclear war scenario" that supports an administration strategy for “uni-polar domination."
The ministry called it a “typical product of ‘America first’, the height of self-righteousness, arrogance, high-handed and arbitrary practice" as it alleged that the defensive strategy was an “attempt to militarize outer space" and “preemptively attain military superiority in an all-round way."
Russia And China Call Donald Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ Plan ‘Deeply Destablising’
Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova stated that the ‘Golden Dome’ plan would undermine the foundations of strategic stability by creating a global missile defense system. Moscow had previously joined Beijing in condemning the plan earlier this month, following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In a joint statement, the two leaders declared the plan “deeply destabilizing" and warned it erodes the “inseparable interrelationship between strategic offensive arms and strategic defensive arms." They also argued that it would transform “outer space into an environment for placing weapons and and arena for armed confrontation."
China Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said that “the project will heighten the risk of turning space into a war zone and creating a space arms race, and shake the international security and arms control system."
