New York’s newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared a video of the City Hall subway station in his first social media post after winning the mayoral race, marking a symbolic start to his tenure. Mamdani is the first Indian-American Muslim to hold the city’s top office.
Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York mayor marks a remarkable ascent for the lawmaker who rose from relative obscurity to mount a dynamic, grassroots campaign for the leadership of America’s largest city.
Since his victory in the Democratic primary in June, Mamdani has become familiar across New York, appearing on television screens, posters, and badges proudly worn by his supporters.
The 34-year-old, born in Uganda to a family of Indian origin, moved to the United States at the age of seven and became a US citizen in 2018.
