The summit of the Group of 20 leading economies in Rio de Janeiro produced a joint declaration on Monday to address major global challenges, including both ongoing major wars and promote strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth.
In an official statement, the G20 Brasil 2024 stated that the Rio de Janeiro Leaders’ Declaration establishes actions towards concrete results, based on the priorities of the Brazilian G20 presidency, which include social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty, sustainable development, energy transitions and climate action, and the reform of global governance institutions.
G20 SUMMIT IN BRAZIL: WHAT THE RIO DECLARATION STATED ABOUT WARS
The G20 declaration referred to the “catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and the escalation in Lebanon", and stressed the urgent need to expand humanitarian assistance and reinforce the protection of civilians.
The leaders and economies also condemned terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations".
“We note with distress the immense human suffering and the adverse impact of wars and conflicts around the world," the declaration stated.
“Concerning the ongoing conflicts and wars, we reiterate our national positions and resolutions adopted at the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly and underscore that all states must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety. In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state," it stated.
“We affirm that all parties must comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and in this regard condemn all attacks against civilians and infrastructure," it stated.
“While expressing our deep concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the escalation in Lebanon, we emphasize the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance and to reinforce the protection of civilians and demand the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale. We highlight the human suffering and negative impacts of the war," the declaration mentioned.
“Affirming the Palestinian right to self-determination, we reiterate our unwavering commitment to the vision of the two-state solution where Israel and a Palestinian State live side by side in peace within secure and recognized borders, consistent with international law and relevant UN resolutions. We are united in support for a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza in line with UN Security Council Resolution n. 2735 and in Lebanon that enables citizens to return safely to their homes on both sides of the Blue Line."
“Specifically concerning the war in Ukraine, while recalling our discussions in New Delhi, we highlight the human suffering and negative added impacts of the war with regard to global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation and growth," the declaration stated.
“We welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace, upholding all the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter for the promotion of peaceful, friendly, and good neighborly relations among nations," it mentioned.
“We recommit to advancing the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons and a safer place for all and will uphold our obligations in this regard. We condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," it added.
WHAT PM MODI SAID AT THE G20 SUMMIT
The countries of the Global South are most adversely impacted by the food, fuel and fertiliser crisis caused by global conflicts and G20 must give primacy to their concerns and priorities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.
In an address on the first day of the G20 Summit, PM Modi complimented the Brazilian presidency of the grouping for taking forward the “people-centric decisions" taken at the bloc’s summit in New Delhi last year.
The Indian G20 presidency’s call for “One Earth, One Family, One Future" continued to resonate at the Rio conversations, he said.
US President Joe Biden, Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are among the leaders attending the two-day summit at Rio de Janeiro’s Modern Art Museum.
