Prince William and his wife Catherine have said they are “deeply concerned" by fresh revelations linking William’s uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, to the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
In a statement released on Monday, Kensington Palace said the Prince and Princess of Wales were troubled by the continued flow of allegations connected to Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
“I can confirm that the Prince and Princess of Wales have been deeply concerned by the continued revelations," the statement said. It added that “their thoughts remain focused on the victims".
This is the first time William and Catherine have spoken publicly since new Epstein-related files were released in the United States more than a week ago. The disclosures have again placed the monarchy under pressure, particularly over Andrew’s past relationship with Epstein.
Andrew, the younger brother of King Charles III, stepped back from royal duties in 2019 following growing scrutiny of his ties to Epstein. That year, Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers, claimed she was trafficked to have sex with Andrew on three occasions, including twice when she was 17. Andrew has strongly denied the allegations.
Late last year, King Charles stripped Andrew of his remaining royal titles and honours after Giuffre detailed her claims in a posthumous memoir. The move was seen as a further attempt by the royal family to distance itself from the scandal.
Last week, a second woman came forward through her lawyer, claiming Epstein sent her to Britain in 2010 to have sex with Andrew. The former prince again denied any wrongdoing.
In the wake of the latest claims, Andrew was asked to leave his Windsor mansion earlier than expected. The decision followed renewed public anger after US court files were unsealed.
Those files included allegations from a lawyer that Epstein and Andrew pressured a woman hired as an exotic dancer into sex in 2006. They also contained photos showing Andrew kneeling beside a clothed woman lying on the ground, as well as emails inviting Epstein to Buckingham Palace for private talks.
UK media also reported that Andrew may have shared confidential reports with Epstein while working as a British trade envoy more than a decade ago.
