Kathy Ruemmler, the top lawyer at Goldman Sachs, has announced that she will resign from her post following the disclosure of her ties to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The decision comes after the US Department of Justice released investigative files indicating that Ruemmler had received gifts from Epstein, offered him guidance on reputation management, and referred to him as a figure similar to an older brother.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon confirmed her resignation on Thursday, expressing respect for her decision.

“Throughout her tenure, Kathy has been an extraordinary general counsel, and we are grateful for her contributions and sound advice on a wide range of consequential legal matters for the firm," Solomon said in a statement shared with news outlet Al Jazeera.

Ruemmler, who previously served as White House counsel during Barack Obama’s presidency, told the Financial Times that she plans to step down as chief legal officer and general counsel at the end of June.

She cited the intense media scrutiny over her association with Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, as a major “distraction." Ruemmler expressed regret for having known Epstein but denied ever providing him with legal representation or advocating on his behalf to others.

Her resignation adds to a growing list of prominent figures facing scrutiny or stepping away from positions due to connections with Epstein. In a related development, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the resignation of his cabinet secretary, Chris Wormald, amid controversy over the appointment of Peter Mandelson, Britain’s former ambassador to the US, whose links to Epstein are under police investigation for potential misconduct in public office.

Ruemmler’s departure underscores the ongoing fallout from the Epstein case, highlighting how past associations with the disgraced financier continue to impact high-profile careers across finance, government, and public service.
