British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan has lambasted Eric Trump, the son of US President Donald Trump, over his remarks about New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Eric Trump, in a recent interview, claimed that Mamdani "hates" the Indian community and labelled the 34-year-old Democrat a "socialist communist" with alleged animosity toward Indian and Jewish people.

Hasan said this is why they call Eric "the dumbest of the dumb sons".

"Zohran Mamdani is Indian. This is why they call Eric the dumbest of the dumb sons," Hasan said in post on X, along with the video of Eric's interview.

Hasan, a British-American, also has Indian roots. His parents migrated to the UK from Hyderabad.

Eric Trump had accused Mamdani of harbouring hostility toward both Indians and Jewish people. Mamdani had said during his poll campaign that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visits New York.

During the interview, Eric, who is also the Executive Vice-President of the Trump Organisation, argued that the Democratic socialist's priorities are out of step with what the city needs. He declared that New York has "a socialist... communist.. Who wants to nationalise grocery stores and wants to arrest Netanyahu, hates the Jewish people, hates the Indian population."

Political analysts note that Eric Trump's comments appear to be part of a wider effort to stir concerns among voters who see Mamdani as a challenger to established norms.

Mamdani, the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, has not publicly responded to the "hate" accusation, but he has consistently rejected personal attacks from political opponents.

Earlier this year, when Donald Trump questioned his citizenship and threatened him with deportation if he clashed with ICE operations, Mamdani condemned the remarks as an abuse of power and pledged to remain undeterred.

Mamdani had earlier said that he would arrest Israeli PM Netanyahu if the he set foot in New York, referring to the arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court (ICC) in November 2024.

"I've said time and time again, this is a city that believes in international law," Mamdani told CNN.
