Deutsche Telekom and Perplexity AI are launching an AI-powered smartphone in 2026, designed to function as a personal assistant.

The AI-driven device, developed by Perplexity - a leader in generative AI search technology - will go beyond answering questions.
In a groundbreaking development set to redefine the smartphone landscape, Deutsche Telekom, in partnership with Perplexity AI, is launching an artificial intelligence-powered smartphone designed to function more like a personal assistant than a traditional mobile device. With its ability to handle everyday tasks, this AI-integrated device is already sparking discussions about its potential to challenge industry giants like Apple and Samsung.
For years, high-ranking professionals have relied on personal assistants to manage their schedules, book appointments, send emails, and handle daily reminders. Now, thanks to cutting-edge AI, the general public will soon have access to a digital equivalent in their smartphones. The AI-driven device, developed by Perplexity – a leader in generative AI search technology – will go beyond answering questions. It will actively assist users with a range of activities, including booking flights, making restaurant reservations, sending messages, and setting smart reminders.
This revolutionary AI smartphone is expected to debut in the latter half of 2025, with an official release in 2026. Initially, it will be launched in the European market before expanding globally. The announcement was made at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, Spain, where Deutsche Telekom board member Claudia Nemat emphasised that the company is focused on delivering an affordable yet powerful AI-integrated smartphone.
The AI phone will not only feature Perplexity Assistant but also Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs, and Picsart, expanding its AI-driven capabilities, said an article by The Verge. The phone is described as an “app-less" device that will be primarily controlled by voice, similar to AI-driven gadgets like the Rabbit R1. Some AI functionalities, including Perplexity’s search engine, will be available on other devices through Deutsche Telekom’s MeinMagenta app. Perplexity has also launched an Android app for its assistant, it further elaborated.
The development of this AI smartphone stems from a partnership formalised in April 2024 between Deutsche Telekom and Perplexity. The German telecom giant first hinted at the project during MWC 2024, but since then, work has been in full swing to bring the vision to reality. Perplexity, valued at approximately $9 billion, is widely recognised for its generative AI search engine. However, the company is now moving beyond mere search capabilities to develop action-oriented AI solutions, setting a new benchmark in the field of artificial intelligence.
Pricing and Key Features
According to a report by TechCrunch, the AI smartphone is expected to be priced at under $1,000 (approximately Rs 87,000), making it a competitive option in the premium smartphone segment. However, Deutsche Telekom has not yet disclosed key technical specifications, including hardware details, manufacturing location, and operating system. These crucial details are expected to be revealed in the latter half of 2025.
Despite the limited information on specifications, Nemat confirmed that the phone would provide an AI-centric experience, designed by Perplexity, and that “AI will also be on your lock screen," hinting at deep system-level integration. Although Deutsche Telekom hasn’t revealed many details about the AI phone’s hardware, the images suggest a budget to midrange Android device featuring thick forehead and chin bezels, along with a distinctive pink sleep/wake button.
Alongside this AI phone, Deutsche Telekom is also introducing Magenta AI, a new assistant application designed to enhance user experience through seamless AI integration.
Perplexity’s vision extends far beyond traditional AI-driven search engines. Arvind Srinivas, co-founder and CEO of Perplexity, stated that their phones are evolving from being just an answering machine to an action machine.
The introduction of this AI-driven smartphone marks a significant shift in the mobile industry. While voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa have existed for years, this device aims to integrate AI at a much deeper level, fundamentally changing how users interact with their phones.
