A celebration of the New York Knicks' NBA championship victory ended in tragedy in a Los Angeles neighbourhood on Saturday night when police officers responding to a report of a screaming woman shot and killed a family's dog, according to authorities and witnesses.

The shooting happened at a condo building after a neighbour asked police to check on a woman who was screaming just after 8 pm local time, first responders said. The dog, Jameson, was a 2-year-old golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle mix. The Los Angeles Police Department said Jameson was beside the woman and barking as officers spoke to her, and that officers told her to secure the dog before she briefly closed her door, reported CBS News.

According to the LAPD, when the woman reopened the door, Jameson came out of the apartment and charged at one of the officers. The department said an officer then opened fire, CBS News further reported. Jameson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cellphone footage from the building captured the emotional aftermath. In the video, a woman can be heard crying, "Oh my God! Oh my God. I cannot believe this is happening. I cannot believe this is happening," according to ABC's Eyewitness News. The same woman is later heard screaming, "We were just so happy. We were just so happy. We were just celebrating the Knicks. We were f****g celebrating the Knicks."

Witnesses said the dog's owner had been celebrating the Knicks' title win with her family before the shooting. A photograph taken moments before Jameson was killed shows the dog wearing a New York Knicks shirt. In another moment from the scene, the woman can be heard screaming, "He's such a good dog!"

The dog owner's son told Eyewitness News that his mother had simply been celebrating the Knicks' championship win, and that Jameson was energetic but not violent.

The neighbour who called police told Eyewitness News that they felt guilty about dialling 911, but said they genuinely believed their neighbour was in trouble.

The incident, which began with a welfare check during a family celebration, ended with Jameson being shot dead, witnesses recording the aftermath, and neighbours left shaken by what happened inside the Jordan Avenue building.
