Xiaomi has officially announced the deal which gets rid of the GetApps store for its users in India and replaces it with a made-in-India store.

GetApps store is the alternative to Play Store for Xiaomi users in India
Xiaomi users in India are going to see a big change on their phones in the coming weeks. The company has confirmed its plans to replace the GetApps ecosystem with the Indus AppStore. We have heard reports talking about this change earlier in 2024 but now Xiaomi has officially announced the deal with PhonePe to make it happen. The company has offered its GetApps for Xiaomi and Redmi phones in the country for years, but that will be changing in the next few months.
Good Riddance, GetApps
Xiaomi users have been annoyed by GetApps for years, mostly because of the ads and app recommendations it would notify them and clutter their lockscreen. We have often asked the brand to consider some changes for the Indian market, and going with the Indus AppStore seems to be its answer for everyone’s wishes.
We still don’t know if the change in the local app store will be applicable for both Xiaomi and Redmi phones. We have reached out to the brand and will update with the details when available.
Why Now?
The Indus AppStore is an interesting move for Xiaomi at a time when its market position in the country feels on the balance. While the premium launches have excited people, the obvious change in strategy with the Redmi Notes have confused buyers, especially when they have a plethora of options available in the range.
Google is the de-facto provider of the Play Store for apps in India and Xiaomi will continue to have that available. But the move to the IndusApp Store will be welcomed by both existing and prospective Xiaomi phone users.
Most people still rely on the Play Store for Android apps, and Google itself encourages that, but having one more app store is not rare and we have brands like Samsung, Vivo and even Oppo also offer them. All we hope is the new Indus App Store does not become another source of ads for these users.
