Xiaomi is ready to follow in Apple and Google's footstep with its own mobile chipset,

Xiaomi is finally entering the chipset battle with the likes of Google and Apple in its sight. The brand has officially announced the release date of its much-awaited in-house smartphone chipset, the XRING O1. In a post on Weibo, the Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun, unveiled the chip’s name and shared its launch date as well.

The company is bringing its self-developed SoC with an aim to reduce its dependency on other major companies like MediaTek or Qualcomm for its devices. The new hardware could make it possible that Xiaomi stops using MediaTek or Qualcomm SoCs for its smartphones. Google and Apple have already adopted this strategy with their Pixel and iPhone lineup over the last few years.

Xiaomi Phone Chipset: New Qualcomm Rival?

The new Xiaomi chipset for mobile devices will be announced on May 22 in China. The details about the Xiaomi chipset come via tipster named Digital Chat Station. The post says the XRING O1 or Xuanjie O1 (in Chinese) chip will be built on a 5nm process which is not the latest available technology in the industry.

Earlier, rumours suggested that it would have a 1+3+4 CPU with one Cortex-X925 core, three Cortex-A725 cores and four Cortex-A520 cores clocked at up to 3.2GHz, 2.6GHz, and 2GHz, respectively, as well as an Imagination Technologies GPU and a Unisoc 5G modem. It will reportedly be identical to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Xiaomi will become the fourth global brand after Apple, Samsung and Huawei to introduce its own SoC for mobile device. Having said, this won’t be Xiaomi’s first attempt in this arena, as we saw the Surge S1 introduced in 2017 but it failed in the market due to limited baseband capabilities.

Having its own chipset also means Xiaomi can offer better tuning and control of its ecosystem. With this the company aims to separate itself apart from other industry competitors by focusing on core technology.

Earlier, it was stated that the XRING 01 was built on TSMC’s older 4nm technology and will use ARM’s older CPU designs rather than in-house cores.
