Apple has offered satellite for SOS calls and messages for iPhones and Apple Watch models, but soon the features could double up.

Apple's satellite tech could go beyond emergency services.

Apple's satellite tech could go beyond emergency services.

Apple’s focus on satellite features have been limited to emergency calls and messages for a few years but the company could boost its service with not just one but five new features very soon. The report from Bloomberg this week highlights Apple’s intention to build on more services as the device sales slow down and satellite could be another strong part of that strategy.

The company could actually have satellites working for other basic features and not just limited to your emergency needs. More importantly, Apple is eyeing third-party integration for apps that will work with satellite networks.

Apple Satellite Upgrade: 5 New Features Likely To Come

Using Maps

Apple wants to open the satellite access so that you can use Apple Maps for navigation, especially when you are far out without any network or Wi-Fi support. This might become really helpful for people who venture out into the wild, and even drive down to remote places. Apple wants to enable them to use navigation via its satellite service

Sharing Photos

If using Maps via satellite sounded exciting, Apple could also make it work for sharing photos through the iMessage app. This makes its product even more appealing for more users when you can actually engage in media sharing even if the network is not available.

Satellite Tech For Better 5G

Apple could have satellite tech used to improve the coverage performance of 5G networks which is called 5G NTN so that cell towers can use the power from the space to give you better calling quality.

Third Party Support

The company could integrate third-party apps by offering developers access to its API and make the satellite feature work for their apps. This could become another big breakthrough for the industry with others likely to follow.

Satellite Connect In Your Car

iPhone users need to point towards the sky to make the satellite feature work but the change also includes the ability to use the service in the car, or even when the iPhone is in your pocket.

Apple does have ambitions and it is fueling them with the help of its satellite partner Globalstar and the report claims the company is even helping finance these satellite upgrades. Now, the big question is, can Apple afford to keep these rumoured features free for all users? It just might, at least for the first year, and then the bills start to ring in.
