A Chinese man underwent surgery to get a part of his small intestine removed after he endured a three-hour childbirth simulation at his girlfriend’s request.

The woman, residing in Henan province, brought her boyfriend to the simulation centre as a pre-marital “test". This was encouraged by her family, who believed the experience would make him a better husband. Despite initial hesitation, the boyfriend agreed.

The simulation employed electrical currents to replicate labour contractions. The intensity progressively increased over the first 90 minutes, reaching the maximum level for the remaining duration. The girlfriend recounted her boyfriend beginning to scream and struggle at level 8, escalating to cries and gasps for air by level 10, South China Morning Post reported citing NetEase News.

Subsequently, the boyfriend suffered from severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and exhaustion. The woman explained to him that their intention was not to cause pain, but to provide him with an understanding of the challenges of childbirth.

However, a week later, the man’s condition deteriorated, leading to his hospitalisation. Doctors discovered irreversible damage to a section of his small intestine. The woman revealed that the engagement had been cancelled and her boyfriend’s family was contemplating legal action. While accepting responsibility for her boyfriend’s condition, the woman expressed hope for his recovery.

The incident sparked widespread debate on Chinese social media, with many criticising the woman’s actions and emphasising the significant differences between simulated pain and the realities of childbirth. Legal experts offered opinions, suggesting the woman could face financial repercussions for the man’s injuries.
