Israel and Iran traded missile fire for a fifth straight day Tuesday, as US President Donald Trump warned Tehran residents to “immediately evacuate" and left a G7 summit early.
Despite growing calls for the longtime foes to end hostilities, neither Israel nor Iran showed any signs of cutting short the missile blitz kicked off Friday, when Israel launched an unprecedented series of aerial raids targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities.
After a new wave of Israeli strikes on Iran’s capital—including a dramatic attack on a state TV building—both countries activated their missile defence systems overnight into Tuesday, with Israel’s army briefly urging residents to seek shelter from incoming Iranian missiles.
Iran’s health ministry said at least 224 people have been killed and more than 1,200 wounded. Tehran has responded with barrages of missiles and drones that hit Israeli cities and towns, killing at least 24 people and wounding 592 others, according to the prime minister’s office.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that his country is “changing the face of the Middle East" through its ongoing military campaign against Iran, which he said could bring about “radical changes" within the country.
He outlined three primary objectives for the operation: dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, destroying its ballistic missile production capabilities, and dismantling what he called the “axis of terrorism," referring to Iran-aligned militant groups across the region. “We will do whatever is necessary to achieve these goals, and we are closely coordinated with the United States," he stated.
Netanyahu also did not rule out the possibility of targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran, meanwhile, has threatened to exit the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty—which was made to halt the spread of nuclear weapons-making capability and guarantee the right of all members to develop nuclear energy for peaceful ends.
