Google’s popular web browser Chrome is facing a new security threat and users have been issued an alert by the Indian government this week. The latest Chrome security comes just a day before the year 2024 ends. The alert has been marked to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) with a high severity ranking, which ought to get millions of Chrome users on Windows, macs and Linux systems in the country extremely concerned.

Chrome Security Alert: What It Says

The CERT-In note dated December 30, 2024, says, “Multiple vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to Type Confusion in V8; Out of bounds memory access in V8; Out of bounds write in V8 and Use after free in compositing."

The agency also mentioned that any attacker can remotely exploit these vulnerabilities by executing a specially crafted webpage to conduct remote code execution or cause denial of service (DoS) conditions on the targeted system.

Chrome is used by millions, but the security risk is most affecting the people who are running these versions on their machines:

– Chrome for Desktop versions prior to 131.0.6778.204/.205 (for Windows and Mac)

– Chrome for Desktop versions prior to 131.0.6778.204 (for Linux)

Chrome Security Risk Alert: Should You Worry?

The risks have been notified by Google which means the fix is already available so that you can install the latest version of Chrome for Windows/macOS or Linux. You can do this by heading over to the three-dot menu on Chrome – Settings – About – Update Chrome. Google has listed the security fixes that come with the stable channel update and also given more details about how the issues can be exploited to steal your data by hackers.
