OpenAI is building new ways to get people to pay for ChatGPT and bringing AI to Macs is one of them.

OpenAI is planning to roll out a new feature within the ChatGPT app for macOS that supports several note-taking, coding apps, and other third-party apps. Describing this feature as agentic, the AI firm highlighted that the chatbot will be able to read on-screen information in the supported apps and help users with queries.
The new feature, announced on day 11 of OpenAI’s 12-day shipping schedule, is currently available only to the paid subscribers of the AI platform. Moreover, users can use the Advanced Voice Mode while working with these note-taking and coding apps.
According to the Chief Product Officer at OpenAI, Kevin Weil, the latest update of ChatGPT for macOS enables ChatGPT to work with roughly 30 macOS apps. For instance, it can read content from Apple Notes, Quip, and Notion. Check out the full list of new apps supported by ChatGPT on Mac:
New IDEs: BBEdit, MatLab, Nova, Script Editor, and TextMate
VS Code forks: VSCodium, Cursor, VSCode Insiders, and WindSurf
JetBrains IDEs: Android Studio, AppCode, CLion, DataGrip, GoLand, IntelliJ IDEA, PHPStorm, PyCharm, RubyMine, RustRover, and WebStorm
Terminal apps: Prompts and Warp
Productivity apps: Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip
With this feature, users can open a supported app and navigate to any screen or content. Then, they can use the shortcut Option + Space to open the app’s small text-field view. Following this, the chatbot may view what the user sees within the app. Users can now ask questions via text prompts or Advanced Voice Mode, and ChatGPT will quickly respond to them. Moreover, users can highlight a specific part of text or code and use natural commands such as “How to make this better" to get the AI to comprehend the context.
For privacy reasons, users will be able to control when and which apps can be accessed by ChatGPT at any time. “You have the same level of control over how this data is stored or processed as you normally would over anything else in your conversation history," OpenAI stated.
The integration with third-party apps is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Pro, Teams, and Edu subscribers. However, free ChatGPT users and those using the Windows app will have to wait till next year to access this feature.
It’s worth noting that users can download the ChatGPT app for macOS from OpenAI official website. It is available for free, however, ChatGPT Plus subscribers can sign in and access their full account. In addition to that, the recently released macOS 15.2 allows users to interact with ChatGPT directly from Siri.
