Vivo has been making solid ground in the smartphone market and now seems to be eyeing the premium XR headset segment.
Vivo XR headset could have features similar to the Vision Pro but on Android XR
Vivo is all set to step into the mixed reality headset market soon. The company, recently, announced that they will be releasing their first-ever mixed reality (XR) device in 2025. The brand aims to compete with the Vision Pro headset, despite the latter's underwhelming sales performance in the global market.
As per a report by GSMArena, Vivo's MR device is slated to be introduced as a prototype in September or October next year and will be packed with significant features that will surpass the Vision Pro.
The same report says the company has set up a dedicated team of 500 members to work on the upcoming mixed-reality headset. Also, the device is going to undergo “high-fidelity prototype experiences" in several cities across China by late 2025, a Vivo executive was quoted saying.
Apart from Vivo, tech giant Samsung will also be releasing its first mixed-reality headset, named Moohan XR Headset next year. Recently, the South Korean tech giant unveiled the first look of its VR headset. As per reports, the device will offer support for Google's Gemini AI assistant and will arrive with apps that are optimised to run on a large, virtual display. It will launch next year, as a competitor to the Apple Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3.
Samsung’s upcoming headset, dubbed Moohan, runs on Android XR, Google's new platform developed to handle AR, VR and AI technologies.
The South Korean company claims the Moohan XR headgear will have cutting-edge displays, passthrough capabilities, and support for multi-modal input. The Apple Vision Pro, which is regarded as its closest competitor, comes with Micro-OLED displays with a per-eye resolution of 3,660 × 3,200 pixels.
Additionally, the XR headset will be equipped with significant features including Google’s circle to search with gestures, Live Translations, Google Maps, viewing photos and videos on a virtual display with Google TV and Google Photos and browsing the web using Chrome. This indicates that Vivo’s upcoming XR Headset might see tough competition with Samsung’s XR headset.
