Google has rolled out a new feature to make file sharing easier for Android users. The update makes it possible to distribute files using QR codes using Quick Share, which is already accessible on Android smartphones. The feature is available to users worldwide and is part of the most recent version (24.49.33) of Google Play Services.

It is easy to use. Users will be presented with a full-screen interface that includes a new ‘Use QR code’ option under the ‘Send to nearby devices’ section after selecting the Quick sharing option in the sharing menu. When you select this, a special QR code including the Quick Share logo will appear. The device’s screen automatically brightens when the QR code displays, making it easier for neighbouring devices to scan it.

This new method makes the file transfer process easier. The recipient simply needs to point their Android handset at the QR code while the camera app is active. After scanning, the file transfer will begin when the “quickshare.google" link opens automatically. Google guarantees that no other actions such as adding contacts, confirming devices, or changing settings are needed.

The same QR code can be scanned by numerous devices, allowing files to be shared with several users simultaneously. This feature is particularly useful for group activities like sending documents to coworkers or sharing event images. This QR code-based technique can help users who have had trouble with Quick Share identify nearby devices.

To improve Android’s usability, Google included the QR code-sharing feature in their December 2024 Feature Bundle. This update makes Quick Share more reliable, especially when devices are not displayed on the list of nearby devices, even when it has been available for a while.

As per Google, sharing using QR codes is a big improvement that helps make Android more user-friendly for everyone, from casual users to IT specialists, enhancing the platform’s adaptability and usability.

Users of Samsung smartphones may be familiar with this feature. Galaxy devices have had their type of QR code-based sharing for some time, known as Samsung Quick Share. However, Samsung’s version adds several unique capabilities, such as the ability to exchange files via Samsung Cloud.
